Making Meaning of the Ending of Days

Many among us now are crazy for meanings, and crazed by seeking them out. The meanings of life aren’t inherited. What is inherited is the mandate to make meaning of life by how we live. The ending of life gives life’s meanings a chance to show, as the world whispers: All we ask of you is that you be human, now. Our work is to sort out what being human should be in such a time.

Stephen Jenkinson
is a storyteller, spiritual activist, teacher, author, farmer and ceremonialist. He has a Master’s degree in theology from Harvard University and a Master’s degree in social work from the University of Toronto. Formerly a program director at a major Canadian hospital and assistant professor in a prominent Canadian medical school, Stephen is now a sought-after speaker, consultant to palliative care and hospice organisations, and educator and advocate in the helping professions. He is now the founder of Orphan Wisdom in Canada, the subject of a documentary film Griefwalker, and author of the recently published book Die Wise. Having worked extensively with dying people and their families, Stephen has been revolutionising grief and dying in North America and redefining what it means to live, and die, well. He now brings his erudite teachings to Australia.

Die Wise : A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul is Stephen Jenkinson’s new book about grief, and dying, and the great love of life. Die Wise does not offer seven steps for coping with death. It does not suggest ways to make dying easier. It pours no honey to make the medicine go down. Instead, with lyrical prose, deep wisdom, and stories, Stephen Jenkinson places death at the center of the page and asks us to behold it in all its painful beauty.

In this day long teaching Stephen will touch on the themes from his book that teach the skills of dying, skills that have to be learned in the course of living deeply and well. How we die, how we care for dying people, and how we carry our dead: this work makes our village life, or breaks it.
